The little town of Lustenau in Vorarlberg in the Rhine valley, with its scattered development, is different from the other places in the neighbourhood by one particular characteristic, and that is the almost total absence of any kind of centre.
In 1994 an architectural competition for the construction of a new state high school with a sports hall (dividable into three parts) took place . President of the jury was Roland Gnaiger (deputy Marta Schreieck). Apart from the architects Nehrer/Medek, with Sa{a Bradi} of Vienna, who won the competition, some successful young architectural firms from the immediate surrounds like Untertrifaller/Dietrich and Baumschlager/Eberle as well as Paul Katzberger of Vienna were also invited to submit proposals.
